This decision will lead to one of the most significant employment challenges in Canada, representing the largest wave of job losses since the closure of Sears Canada.
The 355-year-old company announced on Monday that it will be laying off 8,347 employees, or 89% of its workforce, by June 1. This decision affects staff at retail locations that will be closing permanently on that date.
The company will lay off 899 employees around June 15. At the time it filed for creditor protection in March, the company had 9,364 employees across 96 stores, four distribution centers, and a head office. It is currently burdened with more than $1 billion in debt.
Hudson’s Bay has informed its employees that they will not receive severance pay upon termination. Additionally, the company has discontinued several benefits amid the liquidation process, including pension payments for specific former senior executives and post-retirement health and dental coverage for approximately 2,000 retirees.
The sole piece of positive news for Hudson’s Bay employees is that the retailer plans to petition the court next Tuesday to confirm its eligibility for the federal Wage Earner Protection Program (WEPP). This would activate employees’ rights to receive benefits under the program.
Hudson’s Bay plans to seek court approval next Tuesday for the sale of its intellectual property, which encompasses its logo, name, and iconic multicolored stripes design, to Canadian Tire in a transaction valued at $30 million.
